Narcan Saves Lives – Protecting Our Kern County Youth
Opioid use continues to be a growing threat in Kern County. In 2021, over 190 opioid-related overdose deaths were reported, affecting youth as young as 14. The California Department of Public Health has issued an alert about “Rainbow Fentanyl,” a highly potent and deadly synthetic opioid made to look like colorful candy, pills, or chalk. Even a tiny amount can be fatal.
To help combat this crisis, the Wasco Union High School District, in partnership with the Kern Behavioral Health & Recovery Services Drug-Free Program, is committed to raising awareness and saving lives. All school sites are now equipped with Narcan (naloxone), a life-saving nasal spray that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose in minutes.
This initiative is made possible through the California Department of Health Care Services Naloxone Distribution Project and our local health partnerships.
